This would be such a useful function, I'm glad someone posted about this specific situation! Some procedures (damaged materials especially) are sort of dependent on us not checking the item in.
Ideally not a pop-up after a checkout, since there'd be so many of them to click through. Maybe just a small 'undo last check-in' button with a fixed location on the pinned bar at the top.
