I have noticed a slowdown with a much smaller number of total lists. I don't know if it is due to the number of titles on the lists, adding/transferring titles to multiple lists (often when I notice it), just peak traffic times, or something else, but I can foresee more problems with staff users in the future.

I agree that this is essential for consortia. Besides creating all the templates, making regular minor updates is basically impossible because of the workload.
