It is possible to print "reasonable" lists if you print a "list view" (Ctrl+Shift+P) or click the arrow next to the printer icon. I'd recommend printing to PDF first and making sure it looks OK first - you may need to adjust columns, etc.
At my branch we mostly use a custom list generated from Microsoft Report Builder, but this takes quite a bit of technical expertise to set up.
The current "Holds to Fill" list is insane and completely impractical. The ability to do some basic customization to that list (at the very least fit more than 7 items per page) might make it useful, but as it stands I doubt anyone uses it.

At my library system public service staff don't have permission to access the Export function - but I do know how to export a record set through Simply Reports.
In many cases this seems like overkill though - the way it prints from Polaris looks fine when printed to pdf. When printed directly it often splits into multiple pages which seems like a bug.
