Split High Item Count Communications Across Multiple Notices
Back in 2024, I had posted an enhancement suggestion requesting that LX Starter be more accommodating to libraries with high allowances for holds & checkouts. We found that patrons with a large number of items checked out that fell due on the same day did not receive the expected overdue notices for those items.
We learned from feedback on the suggestion that has since been closed that LX Starter's email server has a limit of sending emails that are 256KB in size. When emails contain a large number of items the size can quickly exceed this limit. For example, a message with upwards of 350 items can be close to 464KB (depending on other factors like images or videos). Additionally, many email clients start to clip messages that exceed 102KB. Heavier emails can also take longer to render fully and are at a higher risk of being identified as spam by email clients.
This all certainly makes sense & while optimally, we'd like LX Starter to be able to handle any volume of notification necessary to meet the expectations of our patrons & send them a single notice, rather than be forced to reconsider our allowances because of its limitations, if sending a single notice with a large number of items is attached, we'd like to see LX Starter mirror earlier Sierra notice functionality & split items across multiple notices.
This seems a better approach than notices not being sent to these high volume users at all.
While we had submitted the original enhancement request after reports of patrons not receiving expected overdue notices, we are now contemplating introducing the statement of checkouts notice type, which as helpful & informative as it may be, is considerably less so if people with a high number of checkouts won't actually receive it.
