Overdrive eContent integration in Vega Discover should work if libraries use SIP2 (barcode + PIN) for Overdrive patron authentication
Libraries that use SIP2 (requiring barcode and PIN) for Overdrive authentication have found that eContent Integration with Overdrive fails when enabled in Vega Discover. Customers cannot borrow or reserve Overdrive titles directly from Vega because Overdrive requires both barcode and PIN for the checkout process, and Vega Discover cannot send the Patron's PIN (it is encrypted in Sierra and not available to send).
Admittedly, expecting Vega to send encrypted patron PINs to Overdrive when the patron is already authenticated in Vega is an unrealistic and unsafe idea. Innovative support have already said that this issue is primarily a limitation of the Overdrive API.
However, if other Sierra libraries are encountering this issue, we can at least make our voices heard that might convince Innovative to work with Overdrive to change how Overdrive configure authentication in Vega. This problem does not exist for BorrowBox and Hoopla eContent integration when libraries have enabled SIP2 with barcode and PIN for those services. Clearly, a solution exists for Overdrive to develop, but, as yet, they are not willing to do so (as confirmed by our correspondence with them).
Please comment below if you are library service seeking a resolution to this issue, or have decided to not use SIP2 barcode and PIN for Overdrive due to the Vega eContent integration issue.
