Leap: MARC Import profile should select default file
In the staff client, we can set a default file for a particular import profile. When that import profile is used, the file is already selected and we don't have to search for it. We'd like this same thing in Leap, but currently aren't able to set a default file and have to search for it every time.
Idea Value
This would prevent having to search for the exact same file every time when importing. It would save time, is more efficient, and already works well in the staff client.34 votes -
More Hold Routing Sequences
Add more (optional) Holds Request to Fill Routing Sequence tables.
Idea Value
As libraries work together more and more in order to provide the best possible services, it's important that Polaris provide needed flexibility in holds routing. This is especially important for consortia (many of which are growing as independent libraries experience budget crunches and are looking for efficiencies). The current primary/secondary RTF and different grouping options are good, but insufficient as material delivery challenges make moving holds across libraries more costly/difficult (especially if there are large areas involved).23 votes -
Allow Administration to manage personal (owner) record sets.
Record sets that are owned by staff remain in the system forever if those owners don't clean them up. We would like Administrators to have co-ownership of those sets.
Idea Value
Administrators can maintain and clean up orphaned record sets.57 votes -
OPAC: Change password request should notify patron and update modification date in patron registration.
Currently, when a patron changes their password via the OPAC (change logon > change password), no notification is made to the customer nor is the modification date in the patron registration record updated.
I would like to see an email/SMS notification be issued to the customer when a password is changed via this method as well as have the modification date updated.
Idea Value
These updates would provide better security for the library customer by communicating a system change that they may or may not have made themselves. These updates would also make it easier for library staff to investigate…

Staff Client: Icon/Button to Email List of Items Checked Out
Adding a icon/button within the Patron Status "Items Out" view which would send an email to the email address on file for the patron which lists all items currently checked out and their due date.
Idea Value
There is already a print icon/button on the Patron Status "Items Out" view which can be used to print the list of items out and their due date. Adding an email icon/button would allow patrons to receive this list easily via email when they come to the desk and ask staff for a list of the items checked out.28 votes -
Add "Days Past First Available" to Item Bulk Change Options
The item hold setting option, "Days Past First Available," was added in Polaris 6.4. This hold setting is not currently included in item bulk change options and should be added in.
Idea Value
Libraries who want to begin using this feature cannot currently bulk change existing items to use this setting (or, if already using, change the existing value). All other item hold setting options can be bulk changed. For parity, the "days past first available" should be added as a bulk change option as well.26 votesFUTURE POSSIBILITIES (IDEA LAB) · 2 comments · Acquisitions, Serials & Item/Issue/Inventory Management · Admin → -
Auto-Split Record Sets Based on Recommended sizes for bulk changes
Once you create a record set, it's very annoying to try and break it into smaller record sets (ESPECIALLY in Leap). Given that bulk changes are supposed to be limited to 10k items or less (according to my site manager), it would be really helpful if there was a way to break up a record set into smaller ones. Ideally I could pick to split the record set in half or in multiple sets of maximum X records.
Idea Value
Libraries needing to manage their collection can bring their system to a halt if they make too big a change…26 votesFUTURE POSSIBILITIES (IDEA LAB) · 1 comment · Acquisitions, Serials & Item/Issue/Inventory Management · Admin → -
Fix the Leap Bibliographic Find Tool Search to use Initial Articles like the Polaris Client
Currently in Leap there is no equivalent Bibliographic Title search to the "Exact match (implicitly truncated)" in the Polaris Client. The Leap search "Bibliographic>BasicSearch>Title>Exact ()" doesn't utilize the Initial Articles entries in the Bib record so any title search with a "The" or "A" or "An" in the title are not returned in the search results. This has caused a push back to adoption since the very real perception is that Leap has inferior search capabilities. I'm not sure why the the "Bib Exact ()" search requires staff to strip out the A, An & The initial article…

Option to prevent same-day renewals
Optionally prevent renewals from going through the same day an item is checked out (applied to items with loan periods of more than 1 day).
Idea Value
Increasingly libraries are using self-checkouts and RFID circulation stations. Both patrons and staff members can unintentionally rescan items that have just been checked out, using up one or more renewal, just by having the items too near the scanner pad. This would prevent accidents that use up available renewals and lead to confused patrons and staff!46 votes -
Patron Preferred Pronouns (Polaris)
We would like an optional field in the patron record for preferred pronouns. This field should be available at the top of all patron registration views near Last name, First name, Title etc. It should be available to display on the Patron Status and Check-out screens via System Administration under Parameters, Patron Services, Check-out: Optional patron data. We would also like to be able to display it on phone notices, but not mailers.
Idea Value
As our libraries strive to be more inclusive, we would like a way to record the patron's preference other than using a note field which…47 votes -
Custom Hold Pickup Durations Based Upon Material Type
We'd like to have the ability to change hold pickup duration based on material type. Many libraries are now offering Library-of-Things types of collections, as are several of ours. And they'd like to make it so you could put a hold on a LoT item, but you need to come get it in 24 hours, or 48 hours. Not in seven days or five days as set by an overarching system parameter that governs all the holds.
We already have material type specific parameters for fine codes and loan periods. The inability to adjust hold related parameters seems like a…

Store item due date in the check-in transaction
This might be a little specific, but I am proposing that the item due date should be stored as part of the check-in transaction in the Transactions Database in SQL.
Idea Value
This seems like a relatively small change to the SQL tables, but it would allow some information to be more easily gathered. For instance, I recently received a question where I was trying to determine if there's any trend in what triggers the return of overdue material (e.g. first/second notice, the bill, or collections). If the due date was included in the check-in transaction, I think I would…17 votes -
Allow users to create and save templates in SimplyReports
Many libraries run the same reports regularly, such as new items added, items withdrawn, circulation reports for authors or other limited parts of the collection, etc. The only thing that changes is the record set used. We can save report parameters, but to use a new record set you now have to find the old report in My Reports/type of report, select and edit it to use a different record set, continue, name and save the new report and then go back to My reports to repeat the whole process to run it. It would be much easier to create…

Did You Mean? Enhancement - Results Produced
Overhaul the Did You Mean process to offer not just suggestions from a standard dictionary of terms, but directed from the results that would be produced in the catalog. Separated from previous Did You Mean? idea ticket.
Idea Value
This will allow for customers when selecting a Did You Mean? suggested term to always receive results instead of odd results or no results. It is understood that this could require significant re-architecture and would likely be a large project that should be considered separate from the other two previously submitted Did You Mean enhancements in https://idealab.iii.com/alwaysopen-polaris/Page/ViewIdea?ideaid=21486.Example: if you…

Did You Mean? enhancements
Enhancement request to update the capabilities of Did You Mean? for search results in Polaris catalog. Requesting an audit of the spell check dictionary and a request for an option for a Spanish language dictionary. Revised 08/10/21
Idea Value
This would allow for customers to better reach the results they are looking for regardless of spelling ability or language. This applies to most every search across the catalog.27 votes -
Captcha for online PAC card registration and user login.
I would like to have the option to require a customer to complete a captcha challenge to signup online for a PAC card.
I would also like the option to require customers to complete a captcha challenge when signing onto the PAC.

Security - honestly this should already be done.31 votes -
Automatically check in items that don't need to be returned
We circulate culture passes (e.g. admission to local museums, the zoo, etc.) that don't need to be returned. I've created some queries to easily identify the items that are due so that staff can check them in. It would be nice to have a setting that would automatically check the items in on their due date so that manual steps don't need to happen. We check the items out for statistical purposes and because we want to limit how many passes are checked out to a patron at a given time.
Idea Value
This enhancement would benefit circulation staff who…29 votes -
Better Handling of "Display" Items
: In its current configuration, a "display" shelf location can be used to indicate an item has been placed on display. However, changing this shelf location is a semi-permanent change and when the display comes down staff must change the location codes, either manually or through a record set, to the original location. Because displays are often very popular, this often results in items being checked out and returned. Without markings on the books that indicate they're on a temporary display, these items are often reshelved in their original location while their Polaris record indicates they're still on display, hindering…

Add a Date Picker to Patron-facing PAC Forms
Adding a date picker to form fields like "Activation Date" or "Suspend" improves the patron experience and ease of use of date fields.
Idea Value
Patrons using the PAC on mobile in particular would be spared the tedious process of adding dates using the number keyboard on their device; this might also cut down on the number of times the wrong date is submitted, removing a source of frustration.25 votes -
Send verification email when patron pre-registers using PAC
When a patron pre-registers for a library card using the PAC, they need a verification email sent to them that confirms that they've successfully created an account. This email should include the temporary barcode that is assigned to them, instructions on how to access their account on the PAC, and what to expect next.
Idea Value
1. The email provides instant feedback to patrons so they will have a more positive user experience. The temporary barcode created when a patron registers is not discoverable after logging out of the initial session. The enhancement would allow patrons to use the library…
