Sierra 6.4 - Automate moving YTDCIRC to LYRCIRC at year-end and don't update last updated date.
At the end of the year/before we open on January 2nd, we have to manually zero out the YTDCIRC and replace the LYRCIRC with YTDCIRC. Besides being time-consuming if you have a lot of records, this process also then changes the last updated date of the item record, which makes that date less helpful, especially for missing, lost, etc items. This should be done automatically, and it should not change the last updated date of the item record.

Sierra 6.5 - Open and edit patron record from item record
When viewing an item record, you can double click on the patron# and you can view the patron record of the person who currently has the item on loan. It would be good to also be able to have the option to actually edit the patron record, and to also be able to access what they currently have checked out.
Idea Value
This would negate having to have another Sierra session open and do a separate search for the patron's record so as to check what else they might have on loan, and/or to amend their record/add a message etc.…75 votesThis feature is now available in Sierra 6.5 (November 2025).

Sierra 6.4 - Add "Back" option vs. just "Next" or "Cancel" in Record Creation screen
When you create (a) new item(s) while cataloging -- or create any records actually! -- the pop-up that guides you to enter the data step-by-step should have a back button. Currently, if you make a mistake and click Next you either have to cancel and start over or keep going and fix the mistake on each item record individually after saved/completed. It can be quite tedious when you are adding multiple items at once.
Idea Value
Save time! What would just take a few clicks/seconds to fix can sometimes mean a lot more time, especially if you Cancel and have…

Sierra 6.5 - Increase the Max Item Categories in the Patron Block Table
Increase the Patron Block Table to allow more than 4 block categories for groups of items by item type/location.
We would like to see Innovative add at least 6 additional categories, bringing the total categories up to 10.
Idea Value
Libraries are lending an increasing array of non-traditional materials. More categories in the patron block table are necessary to facilitate limited lending on these materials. This would allow libraries to limit lending more granularly. For example, allowing a set number of items in each of the following categories:
Books -100
CDs - 25
DVDs - 5
Videogames - 1
Games/Puzzles…50 votesThis feature is now available in Sierra 6.5 (November 2025).

Sierra 6.3 - Create Lists to Global Update/Rapid Update button
As a library worker using the Sierra staff client, when I have a review file open or selected, I want some navigation that will take me directly to Global/Rapid Update to work on that review file.
Idea Value
I am constantly creating review files then editing them in Global or Rapid Update. This is a big part of my job. I don't know how many times I've gotten to Global/Rapid Update and I can't remember the number of the list I'm working on. It would be great to have navigation in Create Lists that would take me directly to Global/Rapid…38 votesImplemented in Sierra 6.3

Sierra 6.3 - Reduce time for Patron record payment lock
The patron record payment lock time should be reduced or have the ability to be overridden. Four hours is an excessive amount of time for a record to be locked. If a patron record is open for more than, say, 15 minutes (or even 5 minutes), the other session is probably not in the midst of making a payment.
Idea Value
Patron record locks are unexpected and embarrassing for staff that encounter them when the patron is in front of them wanting to pay or have a fine, fee, or other charge paid or waived. The patron is confused and…37 votesImplemented in Sierra 6.3

Sierra 6.4 - Hidden review file management and bulk delete
Idea Description
Create tools for managing the hidden review files that are created by the system or record loading. Being able to see the list of hidden review names, record numbers, dates, would be great for system housekeeping. Being able to bulk delete the review files many of which are from record loading would be even better!Idea Value
This idea would go a long way to helping system administrators clean up the review file section of the system. The currently method of having to copy them is clunky at best. Deleting them one at a time is even clunkier and…34 votesThis feature is available in Sierra 6.4

Sierra 6.2 - Bulk Item level holds on same bib record
Often times when items are moving from one call number to another, holds are placed on the items that are checked out in order to capture these items when they are returned so that any cataloging work can be done.
The idea is to have an option to have some way that multiple item level holds can be placed on one bib record at the same time.
Idea Value
The value of this idea is staff time. By having to place individual holds on each item, this can take a long time when there are multiple copies of an item…34 votesThis idea has been included in Sierra 6.2.

Sierra 6.3 - Better Load Table Editing Platform
The Load Tables are a critical point for any data management of a library. While many functions and features have been migrated from character-based system access to web access or within the SDA, this feature has not changed. Programming with what seems like a unix-based editor reminds me of the "dark ages" of programming.
Idea Value
Many times the syntactical error or omission of a line in my load table editing sessions happen because of the UNIX-like environment where editing takes place. Increased modernization of the editor would streamline the process.33 votesImplemented in Sierra 6.3

Sierra 6.3 - Add record to list
Idea Description
Currently within create lists there is a option to add records to a list that can be accessed when viewing the contents of a review file. This opens a search window where you can then pull up a record and add to the review file once you've found what you're looking for. It'd be nice to open up this function and make it accessible outside of Create Lists such that from any record you can click on an "add to list button", which would bring up a window of existing review files of the relevant record type and…

Sierra 6.5 - Ability to update inventory date from "checkin no patron" function
We are needing a way to update the inventory date field when an item is checked-in using the "checkin no patron" function.
When an item that is already in "-" available status, and you check-in the item, there is no field in the item record that records the date of this transaction. We are wanting a checkbox on the screen in that function that when checked, will update the item inventory date so that we can then see the last time that item was scanned.
This will help us with our inventory projects, as we do a full scan of…29 votesThis feature is now available in Sierra 6.5 (November 2025).

Sierra 6.3 - Clear Jarcache files upon first run of the SDA after an upgrade
Idea Description
Automatically clear the jarcache directory in the Sierra Desktop App installation files after an upgrade or provide an option in the SDA settings to enable this.Idea Value
The jarcache directory is updated the first time the SDA is launched after a Sierra upgrade. After several upgrades the directory becomes bloated with old .jar files. It makes sense for the jarcache directory to be cleared as part of the first launch of the SDA post upgrade. This will ensure a fresh set of jar files.23 votesImplemented in Sierra 6.3

Sierra 6.3 - Backup Load Profiles using Sierra Desktop Put PC, don't require FTP
Even if III isn't able to provide a full-fledged editing interface for Load Profiles, add a mode in which we can view Load Profiles and Put PC to back them up. That's so much easier than having to setup FTP to the site, which our IT prohibited when I first gave up on it. This should apply to both m2btabs and m2bmaps.
Idea Value
Make it possible to backup load profiles on PC, which would enable much easier documentation of the variety of load tables and maps, and the load profile menu.22 votesImplemented in Sierra 6.3

Sierra 6.3 - Make URL report useful and launch URLs correctly
Idea Description
Fix the URL Checker "print" option to email, which can be useful to embed URLs and forward them to work on offline, but the columns on the report break the URLs and the report is useless since the full URL is forced to break based on a fixed pre-determined length of column. This would help both interactive / custom reports as well as a larger report of the list of errors. In example provided, anything not underlined in "blue" that wraps to a second line is a broken URL that will not launch.Idea Value

Sierra 6.1 - Protect Global Updates on Server from accidental overwrite
In the Global Update function, "File" > "Save (Server)" should prompt the user to confirm if they attempt to overwrite an existing search.
Write-protection of specific saved global updates on the sever would provide additional assurance against data loss for very important/complex items.
Idea Value
This would mitigate the risk of accidental data loss due to user error. Sophisticated searches may be saved to the server, the loss of which may require substantial work to recreate accurately. As of Sierra 5.4, if a user working with an unsaved session accidentally selects "Save (Sever)" rather than "Load (Sever)", the "Save as..."…

Sierra 6.5 - Send To - Delete Records
Sierra 6.3 saw the introduction of a feature that allows users to select a file in Create Lists mode & then, from the Tools - Send To menu, direct that file to either Global or Rapid Update, eliminating the need to navigate to those functions & then find & select that file.
I would like to see the same introduced, but for the Delete Records function.
Doing so would similarly streamline the workflow when doing record purges in Sierra.

Sierra 6.5 - Upgrade OpenSSH version
Currently INN-Reach and Sierra servers are bundled with OpenSSH 7.1, which is over 7 years old as of this writing. There is a sorting bug (https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2694) that impacts the Scheduler functionality that would be fixed by upgrading to at least OpenSSH 7.6. Also assume that multiple security vulnerabilities exist in 7.1.

Sierra 6.5 - Integrate with IMMS for placement information
Intergrating Sierra with IMMS, Sierra does not show the placement information from IMMS on item records. In particular, when the items are stored in chaotic placements such as hold shelves. This means that looking for an item on a hold shelf or other chaotic type location in Sierra, the user has to copy the barcode from Sierra to IMMS to pin point it's known location.
With further integration, it would be great to see placement information in Sierra to assist staff with helping customers find items on hold shelves in particular.

Sierra 6.3 - Create a Review File endpoint
Idea Description
This idea is based in part on one submitted back in 2019 by Andy Helck. Create an endpoint that will provide the list of records included in a specified review file from Create Lists. I essentially envision this as the API version of the bool_set SQL table.Idea Value
This would provide outside systems the means of retrieving lists of titles that staff maintain within create lists and can provide a means for services to access data without having to work out how to create Json queries.11 votesImplemented in Sierra 6.3

Sierra 6.5 - Penalty points for patrons who reserve books and then don't pick them up at the library
Currently, on Sierra it is possible to block patrons based on overdue penalty points (OD PENALTY) when they check in or renew overdue items. This is done with the patron fixed field OD PENALTY. The system calculates the penalty points that have to be added to the patron record and when a patron exceeds the maximum number of penalty points allowed by the library, the patron is blocked. More info at https://documentation.iii.com/sierrahelp/Default.htm#sgcir/sgcir_fine_penaltypoints.html
THis feature is very useful. Wouldn't it be a good idea to be able to apply a similar strategy for patrons that request a hold on a bib/item…
