Recently Returned: What Patrons See Doesn't Match What Staff See in Polaris
We’ve noticed that Discover doesn’t display the “recently returned” shelving status that comes from Polaris even though "Recently Returned" appears as an option in our Item Mapping list. "Recently Returned" is not a true item status in Polaris. The item status for recently returned items is actually “In” (which is how these items appear in Discover), but the database flags an item depending on whether or not it is also considered "recently returned."
Discover offers its own perfectly good “recently returned” functionality, but it would be nice if the “Recently Returned” message that patrons see in Discover could match the “Recently Returned” shelving status that staff see in the ILS.
The reason that the two won’t match when calculated separately is because Polaris calculates “Recently Returned” based on hours that we’re open as configured in the ILS. So 36 hours wouldn’t be 1.5 days but would be three full days if the item is checked in on a day that we're open for 12 hours on each day. Recently Returned would display even longer on days when we're open for only 6 hours. The same time threshold in Discover would be a straight 36 hours after check-in.
