Allow Configurable Link Text for MARC 505 $u URLs
Sierra WebPAC currently recognizes URLs stored in MARC 505 $u and displays them as clickable links. However, the full URL is displayed as the link text, with no option to use descriptive text from another 505 subfield.
MARC 505 $u is valid for providing electronic access to an online table of contents. For records containing multiple volumes or parts, libraries may need to associate each URL with descriptive text, for example:
505 00 $t Volume 1 $u https://example.com/volume1 $t Volume 2 $u https://example.com/volume2
Requested Enhancement:
Please add a configurable WebPAC option for MARC 505, similar to DISPLAY_856, allowing a library to select which 505 subfield should be used as the clickable label for the URL in $u.
For example:
DISPLAY_505=t|true
With this configuration, WebPAC would display:
Volume 1 | Volume 2
instead of displaying the complete URLs. Each title in $t would open its corresponding URL in $u.
The enhancement should:
- Support repeated $t and $u subfields within the same 505 field.
- Pair each label and URL according to their sequence within the field.
- Support repeated 505 fields.
- Allow links to open in a new window or tab through a configurable option.
Use Case:
Libraries frequently provide links to separate volumes, parts, or online tables of contents within a bibliographic record. Displaying descriptive text such as “Volume 1,” “Volume 2,” or “View Table of Contents” is clearer, more accessible, and more user-friendly than displaying long URLs.
Although MARC 856 supports configurable link labels through DISPLAY_856, moving these links to 856 separates them from the formatted contents information recorded in 505. Supporting configurable link text directly in 505 would preserve the correct relationship between the contents description and its associated URL.
