1. Remove No. of Renewals when item has not been auto-renewed

   When an item cannot be auto-renewed, the first section of the reminder notice should not display no. of renewals to the right of the title. Patrons who do not read the text carefully tend to assume that the item did renew and they still have renewals left.

   This would make it more obvious to patrons that the item had not renewed. There are already too many elements contained in the reminder notice, with no ability to bold or emphasize or reformat so the three sections are more clearly defined. This has led to a lot of confusion for our patrons.

2. Count Renewals Separately- how many patrons actually checked out an item

   For collection development purposes, we need to know how popular an item is. Right now, renewals from the same patron counts as a circ. It would help to have renewals counted separately so that we can have an accurate circulation stat. For example, our YA Manga (33090005890258) shows that lifetime circulation is 5 but it's actually 2 patron checkouts with 3 renewals. This number makes it seem that this manga is more popular than it is. New items are easier to count right now but as time passes, looking at the history will become more time consuming.

3. Set Unclaimed Items to Missing from Picklist in Leap

   Add a "Missing" button to the action headers above the items in the Unclaimed tab of the picklist in Leap.

   Idea Value
   When staff open the unclaimed list and pull items off the hold shelf, they have no direct way to handle items missing from the shelf. Rather than having to use a lengthy work around, it would be more efficient if staff could change the item circ status from within the Unclaimed tab.

   Currently staff have to copy the barcode to check in the missing item (by logging in as the assigned branch - something they may not have permission to do) to change the status to Available before resetting it to Missing (which has to be done in the desktop client), it would save staff time, trouble, and possibly passing the issue up to supervisory staff to set the item to Missing from within the picklist.

   Additionally, any process that requires checking in an item that is not actually in hand creates a false and potentially misleading transaction trail.

   Add a "Missing" button to the action headers above the items in the Unclaimed tab of the picklist in Leap.

4. Staff Creating Holds on Non-Cir Items - Changed Permissions to Limit This

   We've noticed a significant problem with staff creating holds on items that can't be loaned (non-cirulating; lost; deleted; etc.) because they have the ability to bypass item block messages. We tried to fix this gap by removing the "Override Request Blocks" permission from general circ staff, but have found that when we do staff can't bypass patron alerts (as simple as 'patron has a hold to pick up').

   There seem to be two challenges with using the "Override Request Blocks" permission: it overrides both patron and item blocks (where other 'override' permissions are more granular); also there doesn't seem to be good distinguishing between blocks that should prevent actions, and alerts that provide information - we either have to choose to give too much access to users, or prevent basic request functions.

   We'd like to see the "Override Request Blocks" permission split into 'Override Request Patron Blocks' and 'Override Request Item Blocks' to help circumvent these problems. We'd also like to see an 'Override Alerts' permission(s) developed, which would not override blocks, and would allow us the ability to treat alerts and blocks differently.

   Depending on their set-up, most libraries may be dealing with the same problem we have with staff placing holds on non-circulating items, leaving patrons waiting on holds that will never be filled, and also item and bib records that can't be deleted until the hold expires. The challenge with alerts and blocks overall is likely the cause of other challenges, as well. A fine-tuning of these override permissions are needed to give appropriate flexibility for staff hold functions.

5. Always allow item-level holds in PAC

   It would be incredibly useful for our patrons if we could still allow item-level holds from the PAC for those items which are not serials or multi-part sets. We want to limit holds for serials and multi-parts using the current functionality in Polaris because it will serve our patrons better, but other functionality should not be taken away in order to do so.

   Currently, in the Requests parameters, unless the box is checked for 'Allow item requests from PAC,' item-level holds cannot be placed on all items. If 'Limit item requests to first available copy' is checked, and any of the boxes below that are checked ('Allow requests on serials in PAC and Staff Client,' 'Allow requests on multi-part sets in PAC and Staff Client,' or 'Both'), Polaris will only allow item-level requests for items on a serial bib, and/or items with information in the volume field of the item call number.

   We would like to use the current option of forcing item-level holds for serials and multi-part sets while also retaining the option for patrons to place an item-level hold for the latest James Patterson if they so choose.

   While enabling item-level holds for serials and multi-parts is beneficial to our patrons due to the specific volume information included in a serial or multi-part item, it is detrimental to the patron experience if they cannot place an item-level hold on all titles in our catalogue. There will always be those patrons who prefer borrowing only material owned by their registered library, and we need to serve them just as well as we serve our less choosy patrons.
