1. Add visual customizations to Leap

   The Polaris Leap login screen consists of two text fields, a button, and a low resolution PNG floating upon an ocean of #CCCCCC. It is, in a word, boring. There are no easy customization options offered that allow a library to give it the look and feel that they want, save for one option that will change the colour of the menu bar. Now, granted, if you have a staff member with some web coding knowledge, they can modify the Leap CSS and replace some images to give things a spruce up. Five lines of code and a fresh image makes the Leap experience much more attractive and distinct for the library. (See attached screenshots.)

   But those are manual, unsupported customizations that will almost certainly need replacement after an upgrade and are likely inaccessible to hosted libraries.

   Please add functionality that, at the very least, allows a library to:

   • Easily add a full screen cover image to the Leap login screen, ideally at the branch level so each branch can have their own look

   • Easily add the library's logo to the Leap login screen

   • Easily add the library's logo to the Leap main screen

   • Change the quotations on the Leap main screen without going through WebAdmin

   Other suggestions are welcome - please comment below! 😃

2. API to Update Bibliographic Records

   I'm specifically looking for a great integration between the cataloging tool BTCat and Polaris.

   Libraries use tools like BTCat and Skyriver to search for new bib records and update/edit existing records. After making changes, the records currently have to be exported from the cataloging software, then imported into Polaris. These tools have the ability to "push" records into other ILS systems, skipping the need for a manual export/import of records. Adding this functionality would aid libraries in transitioning away from the Polaris desktop client (as bibliographic editing in Leap is a tedious process, at best).

   We actually added an endpoint to support this integration in Polaris 7.6 (BibsPost). We've been working with BTCat to consume the endpoint in their application.

   
   

   I'm going to set this to "Planned" for now because the integration is not live with BTCat yet. But the development piece required for Polaris has been done. Please let BTCat know you are interested!!

3. Generate and track a new patron access PAC override password every time it's needed

   Currently, the PAC override password, available in Profiles -> PAC -> Patron Access Options -> Log In tab, is a static, set and forget password. Often, that password is indeed forgotten because it's not used all that often. However, when it is used, there's a good reason for it. I believe this remains useful functionality, but I also believe that a static, universal patron access password is a security issue for patrons and staff alike.

   My idea is that, if an ILS Admin needs a PAC override password to troubleshoot an issue on the PAC or within Vega, then one should be generated on demand and expire after one minute or after a single use, whichever comes first. Additionally, the generation of a PAC override password should be tracked in PolarisTransactions, specifically to mark who generated the password.

   This way, there’s no documentation floating about with a universal key to patron accounts on the PAC. Polaris admins can get the password as they need it, when they need it, and then forget about it when they’re done with it.

   While I know this would likely be a more Vega focused feature, the reality is that there are a lot of libraries out there who will remain on PowerPAC for the foreseeable future simply because of the costs involved with switching to Vega. That in mind, I think this idea would be better placed in Polaris SA for all users, regardless of their discovery solution, rather than in a Vega admin panel for Vega customers only.

4. Change Login Branch in Leap (without signing-out)

   Currently if we need to change the branch we're logged into in Leap we need to sign-out and log back in. This can be disruptive if we have records opening we're working with that would then need to be re-opened. It would be handy if there was a way to do this without signing-out and back in, in a way that would allow records to remain open.

   Admittedly I don't think this would be helpful for the majority of staff, likely more administrative roles that need to perform activity across a range of branches. But it would be a nice option.

5. Process to Delete Bulk Change Reports

   Currently deleting older Import Reports and Bulk Change Reports is manual and can be very time consuming. Our consortium has generated a lot over time, and even once we get through the backlog it would be onerous to keep up with regular activity. It would be handy if there was a process that could run on the back-end deleting these, so managing a backlog doesn't need to be a concern.

   I picture the process being optional, and deleting the reports based on age (older than X number of weeks/months/years). The process would run overnight, and would ideally be built to avoid impact staff activities during open hours - knowing libraries may have large backlogs of reports, we wouldn't want starting the purging process to cause problems, so it may be practical for there to be thresholds of the number of reports to delete in the night or a stop time. It may also be helpful to block deletion in certain contexts (such as based on the submitting user, or having certain words in the import file or bulk change record set name), but this doesn't seem critical.

6. Include the PatronRegistration field "CollectionExempt" in a PAPI response.

   In a PAPI response, include the field "CollectionExempt" found in the PatronRegistration record. Likely PAPI candidate is the PatronBasicDataGet response.

7. Polaris API Making Lists Sortable By Title

   A customer contacted us recently and asked if we could possibly add a feature where lists can be sorted alphabetically by title. Since this functionality isn't currently available in the API, I wonder if it could be added?

8. Printing and Exporting Reading History in the Polaris

   We have had several library members ask why there are not capable of printing their reading history from their account in Polaris. It would be great if there was a print button at the top of their reading history. Can this be be added?

9. Allow Administration to manage personal (owner) record sets.

   Record sets that are owned by staff remain in the system forever if those owners don't clean them up. We would like Administrators to have co-ownership of those sets.
