Clearing Expired/Defunct Holds - Generate Hold Cancellation Notice
Currently, only when you cancel a hold from either the Hold tab or the Hold queue do you get the option to generate a hold cancellation notice. When a defunct hold is cleared from the holdshelf (clear expired holds), we would like to see a prompt to send a hold cancellation notice(s), just as we do when cancelling holds outside of the clear holdshelf process. All those that get cleared could use the same “drop hold” message in the text of circulation notices (explaining your hold has been cancelled because it’s expired/hold pickup by date has passed). These would be added to the queue for the hold cancellation notice job, something we run daily.

Obviously not easy to explain to the upset patron who came in a day late for his/her hold.
Context: Today I had someone ask why they normally get hold cancellation notices when they call/cancel a hold, but didn't get one when they were a day late picking up their hold (missed the PICKUP BY date), and that expired hold was cleared from the holdshelf. Incidentally, this same person is getting the account notifications via the Vega/III Mobile app (we're testing it out), and with that product, you get the hold pickup notification every day until you pick up your item (and unlike the emailed hold pickup notice, doesn't include the hold pickup by date). So the hold pickup notification popped up on their device shortly before staff cleared the holdshelf.
