Data Exchange should automatically identify and fix MARC-8 records.
Data Exchange should determine if a file being loaded is in UTF-8 or MARC-8 format before loading. If it is MARC-8, it should be converted to UTF-8 before loading.
I want to be clear that I'm not talking about using the MARC bit that supposedly identifies if the character set is UTF-8. That cannot be trusted. I want a system like the character detect feature in MarcEdit, that will actually look at the characters in the incoming records and determine what character set they really are.
There are still a lot of MARC-8 records out there, and it is not…

Add "permanent location" field in item record and function to change to it
We have shelves for new materials, and item location codes for these ("new mysteries," "new fiction," "new DVDs," and lots more). Moving items from the new shelves to the regular shelves is a chore, both in handling materials and in knowing (and selecting) what location to change them to. It would be great if you could just get into a function in Sierra that would change the current item location (the "new" one in my example) to the permanent item location (a new field that would be added with this idea, which would catalogers would populate when the item was…

Allow holds on multiple bibs at the same time from a review file
There are times staff need to place holds on multiple items that are in a review file (we are working on a collection and need to change something about a group of items) and it's time consuming to go item by item. It would be nice to place bulk item holds on items in a review file.

Improve the labels for LDR, 006, 007 and 008 in Create Lists
Currently in Create Lists it is very difficult to specify criteria for special fields like the leader, 006, 007 and 008. Many of these have the exact same label, like Audience, which appears four different times. Each of them is for audience as it appears in different versions of the 008 for different record types. Then it appears four more times in the 006.
It would be helpful if each of these different audience codes were labeled in Create Lists, such as "Audience for Books," and "Audience for Music," etc. This would make it much easier to use this function.…

Make pop-up windows remember size and location
When creating a new bib record and using the insert drop-down box, the windows always open in the same place and the same size. If I change the location or size of the window, I have to do it EVERY TIME. This is very annoying. Let me set those parameters and make them permanent for my login.

Improve search relevancy for titles with many adaptations
Our staff have found that when they search the staff catalog for classic titles with lots of adaptations many of the adaptations are ranked higher in the search results than the title they actually searched for. For example, a title search of our catalog for "Moby ****" yields "Ahab's Wife" as the top result, with other derivative works and commentaries all appearing before the first record for the novel itself (in our case, result number 24). We'd like to see the results weight matches on the work's own title (e.g., 245 field) higher than matches in other fields, such as…

Add the ability to create a review file from items in Global Update.
Sometimes I'm working in Global Update and am using the toggle feature or the limit tool. I then want to work with just those records. I don't want to remove the others from the review file, but rather copy the records I want to look at into a new review file so that I can work with them there.

Include authorities in the Search/Holds module
It'd be great if authority records and cross references were included under the Search/Holds module and be the same as what staff encounter with the Catalog module. Right now it is different. In our system, staff often use Sierra to place holds with the public on their behalf. It would be great if authorities were available in the Search/Holds module results display so that staff could benefit from the information.
If a staffer did an author search and they had a pen name (Robb, J.D.) then they'd be redirected to see the other author's name (Roberts, Nora).... Or they may…16 votes -
Permit user selection of multiple Remote Search (Z39.50) Load Tables for record overlay
Sierra uses a particular Load Table to determine how bibliographic records are overlaid when new records loaded via Remote Search (i.e., downloaded from another library catalogue using Z39.50)
According to Sierra's documentation the default Load Table is "m2btab.b", but Innovative can configure Sierra to use another one if desired.
We have found that certain projects call for different Load Tables because different sets of fields should be retained, discarded, or inserted. It is possible to change to a different Load Table for remote search temporarily (or modify the current Load Table), but that would affect all cataloguers for the duration…

Create a pop-up when you are about to overwrite a review file in create lists.
It is very easy to accidentally overwrite a review file in create lists. There should be a pop-up that asks if you want to overwrite the file so that you know you're doing it.

Passing the UPC Code
When an item lacks an ISBN in the 020 field (DVDs and CDs only generally have UPCs in the 024 field) the cover image is very much hit or miss. Syndetics has been contacted, however, it appears that Sierra needs to "pass the UPC code” in order for this to work. This addition would be helpful.

Add multiple items to a review file from the Item Summary page
It's great to be able to add a single item to a review file from the item record page. It would be even better if we could add multiple items from the item summary page.

Add ability to suppress a subfield in the 1xx
Add the ability to suppress subfield 1 in the 1xx field so it will not show in Sierra. This way it can be unsuppressed when the library starts using linked data.

Support SRU (Search/Retrieve by URL) in addition to Z39.50
Sierra supports Z39.50 but not SRU. Remote search and import/overlay of records from SRU-only sources seems to be increasingly important. We have begun to encounter potential partners who are no longer able to offer Z39.50 access because their systems only support SRU; likewise, we would like to be able to offer SRU ourselves to maximize interoperability.
GPL-licensed software is available to add SRU support to Z39.50-capable systems such as Sierra (for example, CQL-Java, yazproxy and metaproxy):

Inter-library loan
We use forms in Sierra for inter-library loans. We have, however, found that some users are too quick in submitting requests. I think it would be a good idea for ILL forms in Sierra to have additional functionality to slow user behaviour down and to allow for more accurate ILL requests:
- We have ILL conditions included as text below our ILL forms that would be better served as check boxes in the form e.g., "I understand I am responsible for copyright"; "I understand I am responsible for any replacement or repair fines".
- I also think if we could make certain…

Block particular bib records from running through a Headings Report, by use of a suppression code
Considerable time would be saved if bib records suppressed from public display (by way of a suppression code) were not included in the Headings Report. These bib records are typically from electronic sets or batches that amount to hundreds of records, some with several headings for each record.

Add "Volume" as an option in "New Record Templates" in Admin Settings.
For volume records, it would be helpful to have 'volume' listed as an option in Admin - Settings - New Record Templates (see attachment). When adding volume records, it would be helpful to have the desired 'volume' template appear in the same way our item record template appears. Currently we have to always select the volume template we want to use. All the other options are listed and it would be nice to have 'volume' listed as well.

Lock Commands in Rapid Update
When using the Rapid Update function to update individual item records, you can select a specific field (or fields) and values to update. After setting up your desired fields to update, you then scan the item barcode, hit Enter twice, and return to the point to scan the following barcode. We have had multiple instances where staff accidentally insert an additional field to change after scanning a barcode. One example is if they accidentally hit the space bar instead of the Enter key. It then defaults to the Copy# field. If there were a way to lock the selected Commands…

Fix "Tile Vertically" so the bottom of the records don't get hidden behind the taskbar on Windows 11.
In Sierra, on Windows 11, when you click "Tile Vertically" so you can see multiple records at the same time, it makes the windows too long, so that the bottom of the windows get hidden behind the taskbar if it is locked. It does not do this if you maximize a record window, or if you use snap. It only seems to be the "Tile Vertically" function.
We use this function a lot to compare records for deduplication, and it is really annoying to have to manually resize windows so you can see the whole thing.
