  1. When a load table's overlay match point targets a repeatable field such as the 019 (OCLC number cross-reference), the load process only compares the first subfield occurrence against Sierra's index. Although Sierra correctly indexes every $a in the 019 individually, the overlay-match routine stops after the first $a. Any additional OCLC numbers stored in the second, third, or subsequent $a subfields are ignored when determining whether an incoming record should overlay an existing one.

As a result, records that should match an existing bib overlay as new duplicates instead, because the matching value lives in a $a other than the…

  2. When creating a new record for a material, it's sometimes necessary to copy part, but not all, of an existing record. However, there is currently no way to copy/paste multiple MARC fields simultaneously, despite the fact that you can perform similar operations on multiple MARC fields simultaneously like deleting them. This would be especially helpful when needing to copy/paste 336, 337, and 338 as well as various subject fields.

  3. Currently in Create Lists it is very difficult to specify criteria for special fields like the leader, 006, 007 and 008. Many of these have the exact same label, like Audience, which appears four different times. Each of them is for audience as it appears in different versions of the 008 for different record types. Then it appears four more times in the 006.

It would be helpful if each of these different audience codes were labeled in Create Lists, such as "Audience for Books," and "Audience for Music," etc. This would make it much easier to use this function.…

  4. These two fields can be incorporated into searches performed within create lists but are not available among the fields that can be exported or used for sorting. Best title normalized is particularly helpful for data brought into a spreadsheet as the removal of special characters and diacritics can greatly improving sorts and searching.

These fields are available via SQL, where I make frequent use of them, but for most of our users Create Lists is the only option for extracting data from the system.

  5. I was hoping to see the login used to receive the items listed in the Item Record History. If possible, it would be great to see both the user and the process.

  6. I'm blatantly copying this idea from a suggestion by Wes Osborn in the Polaris Idea Exchange (https://ideas.iii.com/forums/951742-ils-polaris/suggestions/46833076).

While creating item records, generally while following prompts in an item template, it is easy for staff to scan a value such as a barcode or ISBN into the price field by mistake, resulting in items that can incur bills in the billions of dollars if the issues are not caught. Additionally, it's easy to miss entering a decimal point and still wind up with charges exponentially higher than intended.

This could be mitigated by setting a maximum allow value for…

  7. There are times staff need to place holds on multiple items that are in a review file (we are working on a collection and need to change something about a group of items) and it's time consuming to go item by item. It would be nice to place bulk item holds on items in a review file.

  8. Sometimes I'm working in Global Update and am using the toggle feature or the limit tool. I then want to work with just those records. I don't want to remove the others from the review file, but rather copy the records I want to look at into a new review file so that I can work with them there.

  9. Data Exchange should determine if a file being loaded is in UTF-8 or MARC-8 format before loading. If it is MARC-8, it should be converted to UTF-8 before loading.

I want to be clear that I'm not talking about using the MARC bit that supposedly identifies if the character set is UTF-8. That cannot be trusted. I want a system like the character detect feature in MarcEdit, that will actually look at the characters in the incoming records and determine what character set they really are.

There are still a lot of MARC-8 records out there, and it is not…

  10. We have shelves for new materials, and item location codes for these ("new mysteries," "new fiction," "new DVDs," and lots more). Moving items from the new shelves to the regular shelves is a chore, both in handling materials and in knowing (and selecting) what location to change them to. It would be great if you could just get into a function in Sierra that would change the current item location (the "new" one in my example) to the permanent item location (a new field that would be added with this idea, which would catalogers would populate when the item was…

  11. When AACP is turned on and we've loaded new / changed authorities, there are some bib records impacted by the authorities' headings which do not get automatically updated and require staff edits. Sometimes it is terminal punctuation that needs to be added for certain entries perhaps tied to a new closed death date; or sometimes it's an indicator in a bib MARC field that should get added because it's in the authority record that's new or changed. We think just a little bit of development here would help save staff time.

  12. Sierra WebPAC currently recognizes URLs stored in MARC 505 $u and displays them as clickable links. However, the full URL is displayed as the link text, with no option to use descriptive text from another 505 subfield.

MARC 505 $u is valid for providing electronic access to an online table of contents. For records containing multiple volumes or parts, libraries may need to associate each URL with descriptive text, for example:

    505 00 $t Volume 1 $u https://example.com/volume1 $t Volume 2 $u https://example.com/volume2

    Requested Enhancement:

Please add a configurable WebPAC option for MARC 505, similar to DISPLAY_856, allowing a library…

  13. When creating a new bib record and using the insert drop-down box, the windows always open in the same place and the same size. If I change the location or size of the window, I have to do it EVERY TIME. This is very annoying. Let me set those parameters and make them permanent for my login.

  14. Our staff have found that when they search the staff catalog for classic titles with lots of adaptations many of the adaptations are ranked higher in the search results than the title they actually searched for. For example, a title search of our catalog for "Moby ****" yields "Ahab's Wife" as the top result, with other derivative works and commentaries all appearing before the first record for the novel itself (in our case, result number 24). We'd like to see the results weight matches on the work's own title (e.g., 245 field) higher than matches in other fields, such as…

  15. When exporting MARC tags, export should have all the subfields marked. Now that I try to export say 041, I can´t see if the language code is in a, b or d... And this would be important to know as it is not the same to have say |a fin |h eng and |a fin |a eng.

This is a re-share of an expired idea that seemed to garner some attention its first time around.

  16. Considerable time would be saved if bib records suppressed from public display (by way of a suppression code) were not included in the Headings Report. These bib records are typically from electronic sets or batches that amount to hundreds of records, some with several headings for each record.

  17. The only option in create lists for volumes is to find holds. It would be helpful to be able to search for volumes that 'match' or 'has' variable fields. Then we could search for volumes that say 2024, for example. It would also be helpful to have this in Global Update as well when toggling to variable fields.

  18. It'd be great if authority records and cross references were included under the Search/Holds module and be the same as what staff encounter with the Catalog module. Right now it is different. In our system, staff often use Sierra to place holds with the public on their behalf. It would be great if authorities were available in the Search/Holds module results display so that staff could benefit from the information.
If a staffer did an author search and they had a pen name (Robb, J.D.) then they'd be redirected to see the other author's name (Roberts, Nora).... Or they may…

  19. When an item lacks an ISBN in the 020 field (DVDs and CDs only generally have UPCs in the 024 field) the cover image is very much hit or miss. Syndetics has been contacted, however, it appears that Sierra needs to "pass the UPC code” in order for this to work. This addition would be helpful.
