Expand Bulk Change to allow editing
Currently, Bulk Change allows staff to replace existing information in free-text fields, and add to the beginning or end of the field in some cases. However, existing text cannot be edited.
For example, if a group of item records need the volume numbering changed from “v.” to “vol.,” Bulk Change cannot update all the items if they have different volume numbers. Staff have to replace “v. 1” with “vol. 1,” then do all the v. 2s, then v. 3s, and so on. Similarly, if a library discovers that some of its records have incorrect diacritics, each word must be changed individually in every record, rather than using Bulk Change to replace “espąol” with “español” in all of the affected records.
I have used Sierra in the past, and its Rapid Update function can do this type of editing. It is very powerful and saves staff hours of work.

We have several record sets of items that would benefit from this tool. We have them set aside as a "when we have time" project because of the hours it would take to edit records individually. If we could change them all at once it would be a HUGE time saver.

This seems like an excellent time saver.

I have not used Sierra's Rapid Update, but if it does what Fran is describing, that would be a huge time-saver indeed.

Agreed! Rapid Update and Global Update in Sierra are much more powerful than Polaris Bulk Change. I get that we could, theoretically, use SQL in Polaris but why go that route when tools should be available in the clients?
