  1. The "import records" within Create List was a game changer. But going a step further would be adding the ability to direct scan barcodes into a review file. This would save time in circumstances where you have only a few records you need to update.

  2. Allow patrons to set a thaw date when freezing holds. Patrons often forget they froze holds and the hold lingers until it expires. Also, make this information available in the API for third party vendors, such as discovery layers.

  4. Someone at CHPL is suffering from Polaris envy & suggested Sierra offer a comparable record to copy/duplicate patron records. They're hoping for a way to speed up the record creation process for families of 5 or 6 that visit the library together & all need to register for cards, which is apparently not an uncommon scenario. The ability to quickly replicate certain fields (address, home library, maybe phone, e-mail, etc.) from one record for x more should facilitate that.

  5. Provide Libraries with the option to "always be able to freeze a bib or item level hold".

If circulation/OPAC rules allow a customer to place a hold, the customer should always be able to freeze it.

At this time, customers cannot freeze a bib level hold if there is an item attached to the bib that could fill the hold. Customers tell us that they want to manage their holds. They are unsure of a "Not Needed Before" date, but they know that they do not want to fill the hold immediately.

This is important for libraries that split out…

  6. It is currently an option to be able to set the default view of an item record across Sierra. However, it would be nice to be able to have a different default view set for the different functions in Sierra.

    For example:
When in the Circulation function - I'd prefer the default view to be Hold.
When in the Cataloging function - I'd prefer the default view to be Item.
When in the Acquisitions function - I'd prefer the default view to be Order.

I understand that I could just have multiple windows open and set the default view differently…

  7. The current "Frozen Holds" function in WebPAC does not allow for patrons to select a date at which they want their holds to be "unfrozen". Staff have the ability to set a "Not Wanted Before" date on behalf of the patron, but there is currently have no way to modify the date of a frozen hold on behalf of a patron in the Sierra Desktop App. SDA should have the option to change that date once frozen by the patron, in the event the patron cannot unfreeze it themselves.

Staff feedback: "We've had a lot of patron confusion around freeze…

  8. I was asked recently to create a list of items added to the database based on a fund code. I don't believe that I can do that in Create Lists. This is because order records and item records have no common field to link them.

I also cannot use Create Lists to pivot item records to their attached order records or vice versa.

We need to be able to do this because 1 bibliographic records may have items attached that were purchased from different funds. Example. 1 Fiction title may have items purchased from an ARP (automatice release program), and…

  9. Description
Sierra will enter the FTP login information automatically when downloading vendor status reports when that information is saved in the system.

    Value
Makes it easier to retrieve files quickly and easily.

  10. Over a decade ago, III mentioned work being underway on "cascading holds" functionality. Meant for Millennium at the time, the feature seemed to disappear from their development plan due to staff transitions or some other reason, but I'd love to see it brought to fruition.

The feature would give patrons the ability to place a hold on a series (of books or a multi-disc DVD set) & receive the items sequentially), making the request process much more convenient for them & giving libraries the ability to more effectively manage hold fulfillment.

At the time, I was working in an environment…

  11. The first request we got after releasing emailed Due Slips was for the option to generate both an email and a print slip. Some people like the physical reminder in the form of a printed slip (that doubles as a bookmark!) and an electronic version that they can use as a reminder or a fallback.

  12. As the system administrator overseeing a 54-member library consortium, managing Offline File Processing is a routine responsibility. However, we often encounter delays in processing files because libraries don't consistently notify us when they upload offline files. This results in files remaining unprocessed until the next library contacts us, potentially causing unnecessary checkout delays. If we process the files too many days after uploading, additional errors may occur, making it challenging to track items adequately.

An email notification for Offline File Processing would ensure timely handling of uploaded files. We could proactively monitor file uploads, swiftly process them, and promptly address…

  13. Many libraries are creating individual logins for each staff member. Staff needs the ability to change their password in case they forget it. At this point, they need to be logged into the SDA to change their password which doesn't help if they can't remember it.

  14. Currently once an item is placed on hold, if the patron changes the pickup location after the item has already been paged for, the item will not be paged for again. With Title Priority Paging and “Prioritizing Hold Fulfillment at the Pickup Location” settings in place, this means a patron could be waiting much longer (depending on the “Pageslips: Number of hours before page can be transferred”) for their hold, even though they have fixed their mistake and reselected their intended pickup location. Additionally, even if the old pickup location pulls the item, they won’t be able to fulfill the…

  15. There is currently a setting allowing us to prevent logins from editing records with a location code outside of their current scope. However, users are able to edit records in their scope to have location codes outside of their scope, which then blocks them from being able to edit the records again. This happens accidentally sometimes, and is particularly a problem in Rapid Update. It would be great if item location dropdowns in Rapid Update, and possibly the item record as well, only showed locations in the user's scope in order to prevent this problem. Alternately, the system could prevent…

  16. When going through various Headings Reports, we'll end up reviewing the same bib record that has multiple first-time-use entries throughout the report. It would be nice if they could be sorted by the bib record to reduce staff time and stay in the same record as long as needed.

Perhaps the bib record could be pulled from the Entry column and inserted into a new column in the display that could then be sorted like the other available columns.

  17. When a Sierra SDA login is first created the system utilizes individual summary view properties for the various search functions. By default in cataloging if you open up the summary view of a record you see item records, in search/holds you see holds, in place orders you see orders and in serials checkin you see checkin records.

If you opt to change that setting however from the record view properties menu (say to change this to view all) it can impact all 4 search functions. It would be better to split this menu out, so that the setting for each…

  18. We require certain information to create a library card, however Sierra does not enforce this requirement at the system level. Since it isn't mandatory, some data simply never gets captured and creates more work on the backend.

Beyond that, having certain information in the record would allow us to build a better understanding of our usership so that we can make better decisions as an organization.

I especially would love the ability to require any and all of the fixed-length fields; especially patron category, birthdate, home library, and notice preference.

  19. It would be very helpful to be able to print a Statement of Charges directly from a patron record (and have it formatted for 8-1/2 x 11 paper and mail-ready).

For context, we are a 138-library consortium, all notices are Auto Notices, and we do not run Statement of Charges for the consortium. Yes, you can run a statement for 1 patron in the Notices function, but this requires consortium staff intervention since that permission is locked down to consortium staff. It would be much simpler for our member libraries to be able to print such a statement on an…

  20. Allow for Global Update of fund codes. I work in an academic library and will often get purchase lists from our liaison librarians for a specific department. The records are brought in and the attached order records are edited in GU with the correct vendor, and selector, etc. It would be a time-saver if I could also update the fund code (which are tied to academic departments) at the same time.
