Remember patron preference about receipts
This is connected to Paul Costa's idea "Check for Due Slip Delivery Method Change Before Closing Patron Record" (link). Many patrons, probably most, have a consistent preference about receipts -- either they almost always want one printed or they almost always don't. (Or prefer to have it emailed.)
What if we had a field in the patron record that recorded this preference, and when the patron record was opened for checkouts, the print receipt button defaulted to the patron's preference?
The field would default to "no receipt" when the patron record was created. I'd want input from others on whether it should have to be changed manually by staff editing the record, or should be automatically updated by remembering how the button was set when the account was last closed ... also whether it ought to be visible & configurable by the patron in Encore or not ...
Idea Value
Patrons who like printed or emailed receipts wouldn't have to ask for them every time -- consistency of service!

Chiming in again to add that if added, this feature should also work as the default for Express Lane checkouts. We received the following feedback from staff:
"A patron called today to complain about the email she received with the due date for her books. She was upset that it was "clogging her email". She typically gets the print out receipt, but her log-in on the self-checkout timed out and it defaulted to the email receipt. If we could save print vs email preferences for due date slips in patron accounts, this would help alleviate some of this patron's concerns."
We've recently defaulted to email due slips (based on the staff user SDA context logins) and this feature would help keep our print or no receipt patrons happy.

I think it makes much more sense to have the default preference be based on the patron rather than the staff user login. I've used another ILS that has this option, to ask whether the patron wants email or paper, and then it defaults to that from there on out until preference settings are changed.

Our public services staff sure would appreciate this. We have notes in patron records about this (ex. "Does NOT want due slip," etc.), and it would be so much easier to just default to the patron's preference. It's fine if it's global at first (set to email or print) but once you change it, there should be a checkbox or something to keep that setting for that specific patron ongoing. Simply check/uncheck if they change their mind later.
