  1. Overhaul the Did You Mean process to offer not just suggestions from a standard dictionary of terms, but directed from the results that would be produced in the catalog. Separated from previous Did You Mean? idea ticket.

    Idea Value
This will allow for customers when selecting a Did You Mean? suggested term to always receive results instead of odd results or no results. It is understood that this could require significant re-architecture and would likely be a large project that should be considered separate from the other two previously submitted Did You Mean enhancements in https://idealab.iii.com/alwaysopen-polaris/Page/ViewIdea?ideaid=21486.

    Example: if you…

  2. We'd like to have the ability to change hold pickup duration based on material type. Many libraries are now offering Library-of-Things types of collections, as are several of ours. And they'd like to make it so you could put a hold on a LoT item, but you need to come get it in 24 hours, or 48 hours. Not in seven days or five days as set by an overarching system parameter that governs all the holds.

We already have material type specific parameters for fine codes and loan periods. The inability to adjust hold related parameters seems like a…

  3. Optionally prevent renewals from going through the same day an item is checked out (applied to items with loan periods of more than 1 day).

    Idea Value
Increasingly libraries are using self-checkouts and RFID circulation stations. Both patrons and staff members can unintentionally rescan items that have just been checked out, using up one or more renewal, just by having the items too near the scanner pad. This would prevent accidents that use up available renewals and lead to confused patrons and staff!

  4. Enhancement request to update the capabilities of Did You Mean? for search results in Polaris catalog. Requesting an audit of the spell check dictionary and a request for an option for a Spanish language dictionary. Revised 08/10/21

    Idea Value
This would allow for customers to better reach the results they are looking for regardless of spelling ability or language. This applies to most every search across the catalog.

  5. Currently in Leap there is no equivalent Bibliographic Title search to the "Exact match (implicitly truncated)" in the Polaris Client. The Leap search "Bibliographic>BasicSearch>Title>Exact ()" doesn't utilize the Initial Articles entries in the Bib record so any title search with a "The" or "A" or "An" in the title are not returned in the search results. This has caused a push back to adoption since the very real perception is that Leap has inferior search capabilities. I'm not sure why the the "Bib Exact ()" search requires staff to strip out the A, An & The initial article…

  6. We would like an optional field in the patron record for preferred pronouns. This field should be available at the top of all patron registration views near Last name, First name, Title etc. It should be available to display on the Patron Status and Check-out screens via System Administration under Parameters, Patron Services, Check-out: Optional patron data. We would also like to be able to display it on phone notices, but not mailers.

    Idea Value
As our libraries strive to be more inclusive, we would like a way to record the patron's preference other than using a note field which…

  7. Many libraries run the same reports regularly, such as new items added, items withdrawn, circulation reports for authors or other limited parts of the collection, etc. The only thing that changes is the record set used. We can save report parameters, but to use a new record set you now have to find the old report in My Reports/type of report, select and edit it to use a different record set, continue, name and save the new report and then go back to My reports to repeat the whole process to run it. It would be much easier to create…

  8. I would like to have the option to require a customer to complete a captcha challenge to signup online for a PAC card.

I would also like the option to require customers to complete a captcha challenge when signing onto the PAC.

    Idea Value
Security - honestly this should already be done.

  9. We circulate culture passes (e.g. admission to local museums, the zoo, etc.) that don't need to be returned. I've created some queries to easily identify the items that are due so that staff can check them in. It would be nice to have a setting that would automatically check the items in on their due date so that manual steps don't need to happen. We check the items out for statistical purposes and because we want to limit how many passes are checked out to a patron at a given time.

    Idea Value
This enhancement would benefit circulation staff who…

  10. Adding a date picker to form fields like "Activation Date" or "Suspend" improves the patron experience and ease of use of date fields.

    Idea Value
Patrons using the PAC on mobile in particular would be spared the tedious process of adding dates using the number keyboard on their device; this might also cut down on the number of times the wrong date is submitted, removing a source of frustration.

  11. With the change from ASPX to JSON in Leap 6.7 there is no longer any way to add a message or links to the Leap Login page. Previously we would add links to our ADSelfService so Users could update their expired AD password or unlock their account. It would also be nice to be able to post a message if there are planned events that Users might need to know.

    Idea Value
This would return/restore the flexibility we had prior to the 6.7 Leap upgrade.

  12. Ability to check out items to patrons; check in items

The Polaris API does not provide methods for checking out (issuing/charging) items to patrons.

It also doesn't provide methods to check in (return/discharge) items after being returned to the library.

Requested improvement:provide a way to check out an item to a patron through the Polaris APIprovide a way to check in an item through the Polaris API

    Idea Value
This would allow libraries to interface with 3rd party apps which provide check out and check in functionality. These types of services are more relevant than ever now that libraries are…

  13. The staff member Find tool in the client is very limited, making it difficult to find users without using SQL. For instance, there's no option to search by their Organization or Associated Branch, or by whether they have a Suspended account. It would also be useful to include these details as result columns, as well as details like "Last Login Date" (or include this under the account properties).

    Idea Value
Today it's difficult for most of our users that need to search for staff at their library, or who have not logged in for 6 months, to do so without…

  14. When a patron pre-registers for a library card using the PAC, they need a verification email sent to them that confirms that they've successfully created an account. This email should include the temporary barcode that is assigned to them, instructions on how to access their account on the PAC, and what to expect next.

    Idea Value
    1. The email provides instant feedback to patrons so they will have a more positive user experience.

    1. The temporary barcode created when a patron registers is not discoverable after logging out of the initial session. The enhancement would allow patrons to use the library…

  15. Currently, a library may limit an item to be holdable for pickup at a single branch location. This setting allows the item to be limited to pick up at the item's assigned branch only. While this feature may work for single-branch libraries, it does not function in a practical way for multi-branch libraries. Expanding this feature to have a library-level option would increase the usability of this setting.

Example 1: Library A has 3 branches. They want to make their mobile hotspots holdable for pickup at any of their 3 branches. They do not want their hotspots to be placed…

  16. We would like Polaris to transition items with a Circulation Status of Claim Returned and Claim Never Had to Withdrawn after a specified number of days. We envision this working like Lost Item Transition and the Missing Item Transition.

    Idea Value
Adding this feature would allow a library to automatically remove items from patron view and allow for a more streamline process for deleting item records.

  17. In the Cataloging module of Polaris, we are able to Bulk Change bibliographic records to change the record status from Provisional to Final ('Save provisional records as final'). During imports, this allows us to push records into the system if there are known duplicates, MARC errors, etc.

It would be great to have the same functionality for Item Records: to be able to save hundreds of Provisional records as Final instead of having to click on each one and manually save them as Final.

    Idea Value
This idea would directly benefit the cataloging staff in the amount of time we…

  18. Add granular permissions for the use of the Web Admin /Language Editor tabs. Ideally, each tab in the language editor should have its own permissions sets.

Language Tools tab permissions for "Access, Edit, Add, Import, Export".

PAC Tools tab permissions for "Access, Reload, Compile CSS, Identify Strings"

PAPI Key Management tab permissions for "Access, Generate, Edit, Delete"

    Idea Value
At this time there is just the one permission to access and use the Web Admin / Language Editor. Specifically the permission is the following:

    Permission Name: Allow
    Control Record Name: WebAdmin Access
    Subsystem: System Administration
    Organization: Not Applicable
    Level: System

  19. When placing a hold request, if there are other people on hold for the same title, you get a "warning" message. We'd like the option to eliminate this message and allow someone to place the hold request without going through this step.

    Idea Value
Each step of a "checkout" process can deter people from completing the task. The Baymard Institute shows that 21% abandon checking out because the process is "too long / complicated checkout process". This extra page can also scare people from placing a hold because if they see 900 people are "ahead" of them, they may never…

  20. We just upgraded to 6.5 and I'm very pleased with the ability to save record set changes as a template to use again and again. I make frequent identical changes on bibs in bulk mode to fields for incoming records. I know some people use MarcEdit for this purpose. Instead of having go "outside the system" for this process, it would be fabulous to be able to save frequently and repeated bibliographic bulk changes as templates for future records.

    Idea Value
This would be a huge time saver when doing database clean up that needs ongoing monitoring as well as…
