1. Exporting Records From a Review File - Add option to display meanings of fixed-length fields instead of codes

   When you print a list of records from a review file, one of your options is to display meanings of fixed-length fields instead of codes. In our case, we prefer to export data as a .csv/delimited file vs. printing. It would be much easier if we could opt to export the actual meaning of certain fields vs. just the code itself.

   Save time - currently we are forced, after exporting, to find specific codes and replace them with the actual label/meaning. Sorry, most of us don't have these codes memorized (and often someone on the business side needs to look at the data). So it's off to parameters > general... many lines of codes/meanings await you.

   Data integrity - manually replacing codes with their meaning opens up the possibility of mistakes/changing the wrong fields, etc.

2. Add a method to remove a record from a list while viewing the record

   Add a button or method to remove a record from a list while viewing the record.

   Idea Value
   When working through a list, and viewing or updating records, it would be nice to be able to remove the record from the list and move on to the next record without having to back out to the list.

   This would reduce a simple action from 3+ mouse clicks (Close, Remove, Double Click to open next record) down to 1 click, thus saving time. This would also increase accuracy when removing individual items from a list - saving the potential of intending to remove one record and accidentally clicking on another.

3. Sierra Cataloging New Bibliographic Record Overlay and Overlay Automatic move to same area

   We are on Sierra 5.1 and noticed that the Overlay button and Overlay Automatic in cataloging function for a New Bibliographic record are not located in the same area. I'm proposing the Overlay Automatic from the Edit menu to be beside Overlay as a button. It would make sense if these are in the same area as a button since this would save a few extra clicks. III informed me these functions are hard-coded so not as easy to turn on and off, so I'm submitting this as an enhancement request. Thank you.

This would help technical services staff catalog records faster saving a few minutes thus cataloging new bibliographic records faster.

4. Ability to import Microsoft Active Directory users into Sierra

   Libraries that have personalized individual Sierra logins struggle to manage new and expired Sierra users. We would like Innovative to consider the ability to integrate Microsoft's Active Directory with Sierra.

   Innovative Customers that maintain Staff personalized logins struggle to maintain a current list of Sierra Users. For those that maintain a Staff directory using Active Directory, this is a duplication of work.

   Libraries implementing Context Users can be faced with an enormous amount of data entry (even just copying existing users can take some time).

   There is no way to restrict access in the Sierra Admin app so that users are restricted to only creating and deleting a user. Due to this, only a select few can have the ability to do this work.

5. Reset a loan rule to default

   Create a "Reset" or "Empty" button for loan rules. This would keep the loan rule where it is but it set it back to the default Sierra settings. I think I would prefer the button to be within the loan rule itself after you click the "Edit" button.

   Occasionally, we empty loan rules that are no longer in use and have no items assigned to that loan rule any longer. We would like an easy way to empty the loan rule without deleting the line and chance breaking how things circulate. I imagine this would be useful if you are setting one up and get messed up part way through and would prefer to start over from scratch.

6. Ebooks added to Course Reserves feature in Circulation

   We currently use the course reserves feature within the Circulation Module in Sierra. We love the ease of putting physical textbooks on course reserves such that the books are discoverable by course name and by course instructor. We have not been able to add ebook records to course reserves because apparently Sierra requires that "at least one item record" be added to the bib record in order for it to be addable to the course module.

   Surely one should be able to add a bib record that does not have an item record attached to the course reserves?

   This would allow students to discover textbooks that were purchased as ebooks rather than just the physical textbooks.

7. Create Lists : add relational operator to identify a range of records starting from "today" (last 30 days)

   There are no relational operators that will generate a list of records starting from today.
   We need lists for "items added in the last 30 days" (starting from today), "items circulated in the last 7 days" (starting from today). This logic is not available via regular expressions.

   Idea Value
   We need to be able to generate a current list of records beginning with the records we created today (or yesterday if that is the preference of the IUG). We populate recent title lists, recent circulation lists etc. and there is no regular expression that allows us to do this. We cannot use dates in our queries, and this regular expression would allow us to use a "rolling date" logic.

   We rely on our website carousels to have this logic, as it does not exist in Encore (titles added in the last.....).

   The current "within' logic : "within last month" is not rolling, but literally "retrieves records with a specified DATE field that falls within the previous calendar month".

8. Combining items in the Bill notices

   Allow libraries to combine all billed items into one Bill notice instead of separating them into individual emails based on the location of the items.

   Like many other academic libraries, we bill our patrons only once a semester, so all bills for all outstanding items are sent on the same day. Currently it means that some patrons could potentially get 4-10 emails from us with 1-2 items per message just because their items happened to be from different locations (which includes not only different campuses but also locations at each campus, like DVDs, Books, Displays, etc.). In our context there is no reason whatsoever for separating them into individual emails. Items can be returned at any campus and the same goes for paying the bills. It would help if there was an option for the libraries to decide if they want to send separate bills based on location or if they want to combine them all in one notice. Patrons will appreciate not getting multiple emails for no obvious reason. Getting a bill is not pleasant, getting 4-10 of them the same morning just adds insult to injury.

9. Customize error message "No items requestable, request denied"

   We would like to customize error message "No items requestable, request denied". This error message displays when a patron places a request on the OPAC and it is denied and where we can change the message. The error message contains the name of the resource (245) and then says "No items requestable, request denied".

   We cannot find a SYSKEY for this message for the messages.conf file and it's not listed in the Rules for Requesting (ASAA). Innovative recommends adding this to the Idea Lab.

10. Allow ability to refine view to a particular MARC tag in Global Update

    In the "Select Records" tab of Global Update, when working with a review file, you can only display fields to update by field group tag. When working with large files, this makes it very difficult to find the fields needing attention. For example, if you want to work on 856 tags in a large file, you can only limit your view to EVERYTHING that has a y (MARC) field group tag. This makes a ridiculously long screen view to work with. I would like to see ONLY the 856 tags. Similarly, if you want to update a particular type of note (e.g., 505) you have to display all tags in the n field group tag.

11. Move Print Button

    Accidentally printing full bib records (or any record type) in Sierra happens daily due to staff clicking Print instead of Close. The staff would like to see the Print button moved away from the Close button to avoid this mistake.

12. Alerts for when indexing stops

    Currently there are no alerts when indexing stops working. We would like to see some put in place.

    We recently had our keyword indexing stop working. It wasn't completely obvious to us for few months that there was a problem with indexing as it didn't seem to be every record.

13. Enable Libraries to define what Item Statuses cannot be requested in the SDA

    Libraries can determine which Item Statuses cannot be requested in WebPac/Encore. In the SDA all item statuses are available for item or title level requests. There is no pop-up to alert Staff that there are no available copies. For various reasons, Staff continue to place holds on titles with no available copies.

    Benefits to Staff include providing consistent request behaviours in the SDA and WebPac/Encore environment. We try to discourage Staff from placing staff-assisted holds, but customers begin to rely on Staff request/hold processes that cannot be performed in the catalogue.

    Staff continue to place holds on bibs with no available (circulating) items. They simply make mistakes (pick the wrong bib record because the hold queue looks shorter).

    The Library would like to determine retention policies based on their workflows and collection development practices. This setting forces us to purge missing and lost & paid items sooner than we might otherwise.

14. Lightweight WebPAC tokens for responsive design

    Updated 2018-10-09 -- modified proposal based on a comment from a colleague offline as well as the one from an IdeaLab user.. The modified proposal calls for separate tokens of the label and for the field, e.g. {publish-label} and {publish-field}. The modified proposal also add id and class attributes to the form elements for ease of CSS use as Martin Boyce suggested in the comments.

    Updated proposal:

    Currently, the limiter tokens likely to be used on the Advanced Search page (e.g. limit by language, scope, material type, dates, etc.) are big and bulky -- they return a lot of html, including wrapping page elements in tables, adding labels to search elements, etc. This HTML-heavy response limits our ability to gracefully incorporate tokens into responsively-designed pages. Using tables for layout is so 2002; most of us avoid it at all costs.

    I'm calling for the introduction of lightweight tokens that would return only the relevant form element and nothing else; these could exist in a backwards-compatible fashion with the current existing tokens.

    For example, the {publish} token returns:

    The lighter-weight tokens would behave in the same way existing tokens do, which is to "remember" the settings of a previous search.

    • lang
    • DOCDATE (I would divide this into dateBefore-lite and dateAfter-lite)
    • sort
    • publish
    • searchscope
    • search

    Idea Value
    This addition would allow maximum flexibility for libraries wishing to make their own decisions about layout, including for accessibility purposes. It will make it easier to accomplish responsive designs.

15. Increase HTTPS security for WebPAC

    Note: This might be (probably is) cross-platform, but I don't have experience with anything besides Sierra.

    There are a few security-related tasks I would like to be able to perform on the Sierra application server, affecting the web interface (WebPAC):
    Force all http connections over to httpsDisable weak protocols (TLS 1.0 especially, but TLS 1.1 as well)Disable weak ciphers

    I tried doing this via iii Support, and they were able to do at least the second bullet point, but then the login page broke. Apparently CAS needs to be updated to use a newer Java that supports the higher TLS versions. I was told this would require a feature request.

    This will bring Sierra's WebPAC up to modern web security recommendations. The benefits of https, especially a well-configured https with strong protocols and ciphers, are many. Most importantly:
    Forcing https will prevent any snooping on library patron catalogue searchesUsing strong protocols and ciphers will make it much more difficult to intercept and steal login credentials

    Hopefully the value of those two items are self-evident, and don't need to be explained further.

    Note: This might be (probably is) cross-platform, but I don't have experience with anything besides Sierra.

16. Responsive, Accessible Catalog, Discovery Platform(s)

    The current slate of example set files for WebPAC and Encore are not responsive/mobile-friendly nor are they compliant with the ADA section 508 website/accessibility requirements that kicked in 1/18/18. In some cases, this means that the current Sierra product also does not meet local procurement requirements. Aside from the time/resources devoted by multiple libraries (inefficient!) that are required by the library system to make the WebPAC/Encore responsive/accessible, the way the product is structured isn't always easily fixed by CSS, etc. (Web options, system-generated pages, etc.). These example sets have not been significantly updated in years. As mobile usage continues to climb and the library continues to look for ways to serve patrons virtually as well as physically, we need to ensure that our virtual/online presence meets the needs of all customers. And it's the law!

    Ensure library catalog is usable and all functions are available by library patrons on a mobile device.
    Ensure library catalog is usable and all functions are available by library patrons with disabilities, particularly those that cannot make a physical visit to the library.
    Remove requirement of purchasing/maintaining separate AirPAC (which is limited in functionality). Patrons are now forced to use 2 different online products to manage their account (paying fines online is not an option in AirPAC).

17. Better Load Table Editing Platform

    The Load Tables are a critical point for any data management of a library. While many functions and features have been migrated from character-based system access to web access or within the SDA, this feature has not changed. Programming with what seems like a unix-based editor reminds me of the "dark ages" of programming.

    Many times the syntactical error or omission of a line in my load table editing sessions happen because of the UNIX-like environment where editing takes place. Increased modernization of the editor would streamline the process.

    Design of this enhancement is underway. I will provide an update when we have determined which release will include this enhancement.
