  1. While there are many advantages to way that Polaris calculates TOMs, there are currently some significant limitations for differentiating between formats. 4K BluRays, Playaways/Yotos, and video game systems are all very difficult to distinguish from one another when using only the MARC fixed fields. Additionally, many libraries are expanding their collections with Libraries of Things that are usually coded as "Kit" or "Three Dimensional Object" rather than describing what it actually is. These bib TOMS are also now featured prominently in Vega Discover's rollups.

Over on the Sierra side, the options for bibliographic format can be customized. If a library…

  2. I often get requests to have a pop-up for staff when last copy, or more especially a last copy with a hold, gets put into a status like withdrawn, missing, etc. It could provide a big head's up to selectors so they could preemptively tackle.

    Idea Value
This would provide better customer service. Last copies with holds that were being discarded, etc. could be more immediately addressed to order replacement, contact patron, or submit to ILL.

  3. In LEAP, please add the ability for a user to create a bibliographic record set from a file of ISBNs or Control Numbers..

    Idea Value
LEAP can create item record sets using an 'add from file' option that uploads item records by barcode - and LEAP can create a patron record set by uploading a file of Patron IDs.

We would like to have a similar function that allows us to create a bibliographic record set by uploading a file of ISBNs or Control Numbers.

  4. Currently in Leap there is no equivalent Bibliographic Title search to the "Exact match (implicitly truncated)" in the Polaris Client. The Leap search "Bibliographic>BasicSearch>Title>Exact ()" doesn't utilize the Initial Articles entries in the Bib record so any title search with a "The" or "A" or "An" in the title are not returned in the search results. This has caused a push back to adoption since the very real perception is that Leap has inferior search capabilities. I'm not sure why the the "Bib Exact ()" search requires staff to strip out the A, An & The initial article…

This idea is outside of our agreed upon Idea Graduation Workflow, but because it was just raised in the most recent rount of MEEP voting, I'm going to keep it open for another cycle. Moving to "Under Review" status.

  5. Now that we have the capability to do ad hoc bulk changes to item records from the bibliographic record in Polaris 7.6, we also need the ability to delete item records in bulk. The workflow in the Client includes the ability to select multiple item records ad-hoc, right click on them, and press delete (or undelete). Delete and undelete buttons should be added next to the Bulk Change button on the Local Items and All Items tabs of the bibliographic workform in Leap. An alternate option could be to add a delete option to the bulk change.

  6. Some library staff need to be able to alter the label margin and font size for longer call numbers, longer author names, and longer titles, as well as how the printer prints that day. Currently, staff using Leap need to go back and forth between the Client and Leap to do so. Adding the label settings that are only accessible in the Client to Leap will make it easier for staff to make the transition to Leap by allowing them to maintain their workflow for their current printers.

  7. In the Client, there are undo and redo buttons. The undo button is particularly useful when someone has made a mistake. It quickly allows staff to correct the mistake by pressing a single button. When training technical services staff to use Leap, this button is clearly missed. Having this button will make the transition to Leap easier. Questions and comments about the lack of the undo button are common during training.

  8. Some libraries use tools like Deep Freeze (that discard any changes to previous work sessions) or manage settings so that browser caches are cleared when closed or when the user logs out. Since Leap Offline stores data transactions in the browser cache, anything that is not uploaded to the database will be lost in such occurrences.

  9. The process for deleting authorities is very time intensive. The process should work like deleting item or bib records and allow for not being notified for blocking/non-blocking notes. There should also be a default for how to handle deleted authorities, flip, unlink, etc. This would make the process much easier and quicker.

    Idea Value
This would be a huge time saver for staff.

  10. In item records, the shelf location drop-down menu only lists the shelf locations for the assigned branch or owning branch. However, the shelf location drop-down menu in the item bulk change work form lists the shelf locations for all libraries in the consortium. Many of these shelf locations are similar. It can make it easy to choose the wrong one by mistake. Here are some examples:

    “Graphic Novel” vs. “Graphic Novels”
“Adult New DVD / Blu-ray” (with spaces) vs. “Adult New DVD/Blu-ray” (no spaces) vs. “Adult New DVDs/Blu-Rays.”

The item bulk change workform should be updated so that the shelf…

  11. When using a record set, it would be helpful if there was a column that shows when the item was added to the record set. We use record sets to create carousels that show new items on our PAC. The date added to record set would be helpful so we could remove the oldest things when refreshing our carousels.

  12. In Leap, after doing a search for record sets (ie. owned by a specific owner), you have to go into the record set in order to delete it. After doing this, it bumps you all the way back out of the Find Tool and the user has to redo the search completely. This is not ideal when attempting to clean up multiple record sets. Ideally there would be the ability to select multiple record sets and do a bulk delete (similar to how you can in the desktop client). Barring that, being bumped back to the search results would at…

  13. Currently item bulk change functionality allows staff to bulk change fields that they can't change in individual item records. This allows staff to modify item records using bulk change when they're blocked from modifying directly in the item record. The same permissions should apply to bulk change:

    • Item records: Modify cataloging view
    • Item records: Modify source and acquisitions view
    • Item records: Modify reserves view
    • Item records: Modify history view

The library feels this is a data security risk. Fundamentally, here is the question: what is the purpose of the permission Item records: Modify cataloging view?

    If…

  14. In the client, duplicate detection for MARC records is triggered by (re)saving the record, but can also be triggered separately as an action under the Tools menu. In Leap, resaving the record is the only way to trigger the function. This means cataloguers have to do a fake edit in order to un-grey-out the save button and click past any other functions, such as MARC validation, before they can get to the matching record(s).

Having duplicate detection as a separate function (maybe under Actions or as a button in the MARC view) would save cataloguers time and extra clicking.

  15. The edition statement should be added to the results list in the find tool and the duplicate detection results. The edition statement is already visible to patrons in the brief display of the records in the results list in the PowerPAC. When staff need to search by title or deduplicate records, they need to look at each record to identify the record for the correct edition. If the edition statement were added to the table that displays the results, they could identify the correct records in a more efficient manner.

  16. This undo function would provide the ability to separate two records that were accidentally combined so they go back to being attached to their original, individual POs, have their original items attached, and have their original hold lists attached.

Example: If a regular print record and a large print record for a title with a list of holds on each were accidentally combined, catalogers would have to split the large print items out by creating a second record and move the appropriate “on order” items to that record. The newly created record wouldn’t be able to be linked back to…

  17. In the staff client, we can set a default file for a particular import profile. When that import profile is used, the file is already selected and we don't have to search for it. We'd like this same thing in Leap, but currently aren't able to set a default file and have to search for it every time.

    Idea Value
This would prevent having to search for the exact same file every time when importing. It would save time, is more efficient, and already works well in the staff client.

  18. Currently, Bulk Change allows staff to replace existing information in free-text fields, and add to the beginning or end of the field in some cases. However, existing text cannot be edited.

For example, if a group of item records need the volume numbering changed from “v.” to “vol.,” Bulk Change cannot update all the items if they have different volume numbers. Staff have to replace “v. 1” with “vol. 1,” then do all the v. 2s, then v. 3s, and so on. Similarly, if a library discovers that some of its records have incorrect diacritics, each word must be changed…

  19. In the Polaris client the bibliographic keyword index does not include or link to terms found in the cross reference fields (4XX & 5XX) of authority records, essentially making these references useless during a keyword search. These additional terms within authority records should be indexed in the bib record index for better, accurate search results.

The only way to access "SEE" references (4XX) during a bibliographic search is to choose a specific index (search by Author, for example) and change "type" to "Browse" rather than keyword, phrase, or exact match search.

For example, the actor Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor's name authority heading…

  20. The item price field allows for high values to be entered into it. Which means things like item barcodes or ISBN numbers can set the price of an item in the billions. This incorrect price can then appear in places like "you saved" receipts for patrons and on other reports that are then difficult to correct.

In addition to offering the ability to set the maximum price, I think this feature should be enabled by default with a price of $9,999 and then a record set should be created at upgrade time for staff to review for any titles that…
