  1. Acquisitions staff frequently need to bulk change item records for a specific order. This is commonly done for orders that were placed manually instead of using EDI or if Polaris created item records using the wrong template. In the Client, it can efficiently be done as an ad hoc bulk change by opening the list of items that are linked to a PO or invoice. The ad hoc bulk change button should be added to the tab that contains the list of item records linked to the PO and Invoice in Leap in order to make this process more efficient.…

  2. In the Polaris client the bibliographic keyword index does not include or link to terms found in the cross reference fields (4XX & 5XX) of authority records, essentially making these references useless during a keyword search. These additional terms within authority records should be indexed in the bib record index for better, accurate search results.

The only way to access "SEE" references (4XX) during a bibliographic search is to choose a specific index (search by Author, for example) and change "type" to "Browse" rather than keyword, phrase, or exact match search.

For example, the actor Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor's name authority heading…

  3. When sorting by a column, then choosing an item and hitting located, it resets the sort back to the default.

This is not ideal at our larger locations who may be pulling dozens of items at a time.

  4. Currently, the new 7.4 item language field is using the same Languages table used in patron registration. For patron records, the language preference field displays in their account in PowerPAC. Patrons use this field to select their preferred notification language.

If a library wants to add a new language to the Languages table, it will be added as an option for both item records and patron accounts. This is problematic, because many libraries purchase materials in far more languages than they offer notices in. If a library adds additional language options to this table, they risk that patrons will select…

  5. Imagine the possibilities if we could automate the process of bulk changes to bib records as part of an import profile.

Other ILS systems offer robust manipulation of bib records upon import, but this is missing from Polaris.

By allowing bib bulk changes to be stored in templates, just like item bulk changes, we can streamline the process and save valuable time. Imagine having a set of predefined steps for importing bibs from specific sources or of certain record types. It would ensure consistency and accuracy, eliminating manual effort.

    1. Allow bib bulk changes to be stored in templates like item…

  6. Create a recall function that is separate from the holds queue so Technical Services can get items back (for relabeling, for weeding, etc.). Technical Services often use internal cards to place holds on a specific barcode. This sometimes work, but has a few drawbacks:
    1. The hold disrupts circulation (renewals, other holds, potentially in-transit)
    2. If the item goes into a status that cannot fulfill holds (e.g. item becomes LOST), the holds will go back the queue and be reassigned to another item on the bib. Technical Services usually needs the specific barcode, not just any item on the bib.

  7. Library staff frequently place holds that can’t be filled on the records for e-books from non-integrated vendors like Hoopla. Canceling these holds takes time. Since we still need to allow holds for the integrated vendors, we can’t change the material type to unholdable in system administration. Adding the ability to block holds by resource group or vendor account would solve the problem.

  10. Currently, when we turn over weeding lists to staff to pull, they manually mark 'not on shelf - NOS' if they don't find the item. In order to make the new weeding list functional in LEAP, we need the weeding record sets to have the same sort of functionality as a PickList - a column where staff can either mark the item as 'Not Found' or "missing". Ideally the circulation status could be changed to missing at this point, removing the need to manually change these items in the system and remove them from the record set.

  12. As Polaris currently exists (v7.3 at my library), User 1 wants to share a bibliographic record set with User 2 and User 3. In order to do this, they have to change the record set's owner from User 1 to Organization 1. But this allows all members of Organization 1 with the permissions "Cataloging Record Sets: Modify" and "Cataloging Record Sets: Delete/Undelete" to make changes to that record set. Let's say that at some point down the road, User 4 sees this bib record set owned by Organization 1 and thinks they're being helpful by updating or deleting it. They…

  14. The Polaris Leap login screen consists of two text fields, a button, and a low resolution PNG floating upon an ocean of #CCCCCC. It is, in a word, boring. There are no easy customization options offered that allow a library to give it the look and feel that they want, save for one option that will change the colour of the menu bar. Now, granted, if you have a staff member with some web coding knowledge, they can modify the Leap CSS and replace some images to give things a spruce up. Five lines of code and a fresh image…

  15. We would like to be able to create status codes. We have renamed some we don't use to make them useful, but that is limited. We use in-repair for multiple problems and it would be better for our staff to be more specific. For example, it is used for items with bedbug damage that will definitely be leaving us and it would be good to know that at a glance, as opposed to DVDs that need to be resurfaced and are also in-repair along with books with missing pages or water damage, etc. So, instead of just the one status,…

  16. Our Cataloging staff frequently have to place item-level holds on multiple items from the same bib record when making updates to the collection. Currently in Leap, these holds display in the patron's account with only the title, format, and call number. From this information it is impossible to tell which specific items have been placed on hold. Including the barcode and the assigned branch of the item would make it easier to tell different item-level holds apart when the items all have the same title.

  17. Adding a icon/button within the Patron Status "Items Out" view which would send an email to the email address on file for the patron which lists all items currently checked out and their due date.

    Idea Value
There is already a print icon/button on the Patron Status "Items Out" view which can be used to print the list of items out and their due date. Adding an email icon/button would allow patrons to receive this list easily via email when they come to the desk and ask staff for a list of the items checked out.

  18. Scenario:
    1. An item that has been trapped and is (most often) sent from another library to fill a hold for pickup at another branch.
    2. The Hold is put on the shelf for the customer at a branch.
    3. After X days, it shows up on the Unclaimed list.
    4. Staff go to the shelf to remove it, but it is not there.
    5. Staff check the system - the item has not been checked out by anyone (sometimes customer are confused and think a hold is actually already checked out to them a la picking up an online…

  19. When using the "Reset Password" option on a patron's account, it would be very useful to have a checkbox option to display the password that is being typed instead of a series of dots. By obscuring the password when typing we have found that our staff may accidentally leave caps lock on or type something incorrect - they would like the option to see what they are typing in these fields. Once the password is set, we of course do not want the ability to view the password after the fact - leave it securely encrypted in the database. This…

  20. It would be great to have a way in Leap to change the patron barcode and have it auto populate the "Former Barcode" field in a single step. Perhaps a button could be added underneath "Reset Password" for "Replace Barcode" that simply prompts the staff member to scan a new barcode number. Leap would then move the existing barcode to the "Former Barcode" field, and then populate the Barcode field will the newly provided number. Help us save a few steps! Thanks for the consideration.
