  1. Adding the Scholastic Reading Level to a books within Vega Discover as an option for patrons and staff could prove to be helpful. Scholastic Reading Levels are used in some schools so allowing for that variety can be helpful for patrons to choose items that will be made for them.

  2. A small handful of our libraries have reported issues copying barcodes and BibID's from Vega's lightbox and pasting into Sierra. Apparently irregular expressions like a new line can sometimes be selected and Sierra will not paste anything afterward; giving these staff members the impression that nothing copied over.

We've explained that they can double-click the text to select only it but it would be helpful if there was a dedicated copy to clipboard button next to these fields to minimize confusion.

An example implementation would be https://www.w3schools.com/howto/howto_js_copy_clipboard.asp

  6. Further customize Hoopla integration to allow segmentation of collection content.

Hoopla doesn't do Top 100s or Top 500s anymore as of January 2024. What they can do is "Top Load", which is popular titles across each format (about 85,000 records) and includes top DEI and non-English language titles.
Libraries also want to segment to just Juvenile, just audiobooks, etc.

  7. In the Location Drawer, there is a search box that offers the user a place to narrow the results based on call number, edition date, etc. When the user changes the location, the results update to the desired location and the search term(s) is retained in the search box, but the results don't reflect the inclusion of the search term. The user must click in the search box and manually re-execute the search. This is not intuitive at all. Retaining the search term while updating the results to a different chosen location implies that the results include the effect of…

  10. Patrons with a lengthy reading history are looking for more options to filter objects, for example, by collection or item type. Right now, there is only the ability to sort by title, author, or date of checkout.

  11. The current wording for the cookies is not clear to patrons. Clicking on "Manage Cookie Preferences" displays a pop-up that doesn't actually give the user any option to manage their preferences. It also includes some wording that says "the types of cookies we use are described below" without actually describing them. At the very least, a clearer description about what the strictly necessary cookies are that are being used would be helpful.

  12. We'd like to suggest the addition of a free-text note field available at the bib-level that would display on the resource card in Vega Discover. Our consortium is looking for solutions that would help patrons quickly and easily identify whether a title includes AI-generated content. A free-text note field that is not linked to the bibliographic record that displays in Vega would allow us to do so. This field could be used in a variety of scenarios to alert patrons to necessary information at the bibliographic record level rather than at the item level, especially since many 5XX tags are…

  13. Patron reading history is currently of limited value for serials, like magazines and newspapers, because only the title and date checked out is recorded. Without edition level information e.g., volume, or issue number, patrons cannot reliably identify:
    • Which specific magazine issue they have read
    • How their reading history relates to citations, or research
This reduces the usefulness of reading history for researchers, students, and magazine readers alike.

  14. Currently, the behind-the-scenes view of the homepage tells you how many scheduled and unscheduled showcase blocks you have, but not which are which or what their schedules are until you go into the preview. This information would be so useful to have at a glance to help with managing and planning.

There is room next to the purple type labels for additional useful labels. I'd also stretch out the space allocated for the block titles to make them easier to read.

See my images for mockups of potential information that could be useful for big-picture managing a homepage without clicking…

  15. Now that the thumbnail updates based on which tab of the roll-up is selected, if the thumbnail does not exist for that item type, it should display the image that does exist. For example, if the thumbnail exists for the book, but not for the audiobook, when you click on the audiobook tab, the thumbnail should display the book rather than displaying a generic blank image.

  16. Currently, if a patron is blocked from borrowing due to too many fines and/or long overdue items they can still place hold requests. This causes issues when the patron comes into the library expecting to be able to check out their held items and is met with a block.

To make it clear to the patron, can there be a pop-up or banner displayed on Discover explaining this so patrons are made aware in the catalog before they place a hold.

  17. Right now, the roll-up logic for DVDs and Blu-Rays uses the publisher information in addition to title to identify between different editions. However, there are a number of older films that have been republished by a new distributor, even though they are the same film, and despite being basically the same, do not roll-up. "Dune" (1984) is one example. "Fire Walk With Me" is another.

I think it'd be better to use "director" as a roll-up criteria as that's (almost always) unique to items with the same name. If someone who knows which cataloging field that would be, it'd be…

  18. When placing a hold on a title with multiple volumes, a screen pops up asking "Which Volume/Issue Would You Like To Request?". The volumes are then sorted by digit rather than numerically. So, for example, Vega Discover sorts as follows:

    12
    11
    109
    108
    107
    106
    105
    104
    103
    102
    101
    100
    10
    1

    (see attached screenshot for example)

This makes it more difficult for the patron to go right to the volume they would like to request.

It would be better to sort numerically:

    103
    102
    101
    100
    99
    98
    97
    96
    95

  20. It would be nice if adult books (even those with relatively low reading levels) returned Reading Level readalikes of other adult books (rather than j titles). James Patterson's "The House of Kennedy" is an adult title, Vega indicates that the publisher's recommended age and grade range is 18+ years, yet the reading level suggestions include Dog Man/Pilkey and the Good Egg/Jory John
