  1. I understand that III is planning to incorporate AI functionality into the Vega platform (newsletter text, website content, etc...). I think it would be really useful to have AI data cleanup functionality developed for Sierra.

I'm not sure exactly what this would look like but here are some potential ways this could improve catalog metadata:
    - catalog record cleanup (bad codes, incorrect codes, codes inconsistent with local practices for similar records, etc...)
    - patron record cleanup (bad codes, codes inconsistent with similar-type accounts, etc...)
    - automatic tagging of demographic (we use one of the patron codes to indicate reciprocal library…

  2. The vendor payment address should be accessible at invoice payment function. Currently, the invoicing function needs to be closed & address information accessed at order record, vendor, etc.

  3. We've been exploring new ways that our library, as an institution, can meet the evolving interests of DEI efforts. One very small but meaningful way we thought we might do this is to allow for the inclusion of diacritic characters in customer names in Sierra.

Their inclusion appears as desired on the customer record when created/displayed in Sierra (images dia1 - dia2).

They do not appear to impede searching for the customer by name - the search just ignores them (images dia3 - dia4).

They appear as desired in the name display in the Classic Catalog (image dia5).

    They appear…

  4. Currently, on Sierra it is possible to block patrons based on overdue penalty points (OD PENALTY) when they check in or renew overdue items. This is done with the patron fixed field OD PENALTY. The system calculates the penalty points that have to be added to the patron record and when a patron exceeds the maximum number of penalty points allowed by the library, the patron is blocked. More info at https://documentation.iii.com/sierrahelp/Default.htm#sgcir/sgcir_fine_penaltypoints.html

THis feature is very useful. Wouldn't it be a good idea to be able to apply a similar strategy for patrons that request a hold on a bib/item…

  5. These two fields can be incorporated into searches performed within create lists but are not available among the fields that can be exported. Best title normalized is particularly helpful for data brought into a spreadsheet as the removal of special characters and diacritics can greatly improving sorts and searching.

These fields are available via SQL, where I make frequent use of them, but for most of our users Create Lists is the only option for extracting data from the system.

  6. As I'd done in similar scenarios countless times before, yesterday, I was in the process of modifying the activeholds on my account in Sierra to change them to a newly created pickup location.

There were several that needed changing, so I selected 'All.' However, rather than make a batch change of the half dozen or so that needed updating, Sierra cycles you through each item individually, forcing multiple arguably unnecessary clicks, when the expected & more intuitive outcome in this scenario would be to indicate the desired change once & see it changed for all selected records.

  8. Twice in the past year we have encountered errors in which the overnight statistics process did not complete leading to a missing day's worth of transactions in Web Management Reports. In both cases we only learned of this missing data later upon running monthly reports and finding an undercount.

Upon being alerted Innovative has been able to retrieve the missing data and add it back to WMR, but doing so adds it to the current month instead of the correct timeframe. This latest occurrence crossed fiscal years for us, essentially breaking the reporting tool for our needs.

    Fortunately, this is…

  9. Currently at the time of creating the header report it is possible to exclude records without CAT DATE. We request to add a new filter to the heading report from the fixed field "Bib Code 3" in order to exclude bibliographic records with the value pending validation (supressed records from webpac).

  11. Improving universal accessibility features for users/employees with diverse accessibility needs.

For example, for employees with visual impairments :
    - High contrast mode and adjustable font size. Currently, users can change text color and size, but increasing the font size often causes content to be hidden, as the window does not automatically adjust. Users must manually resize the window each time. A responsive layout would greatly improve usability.

Other potential improvements could include : screen reader compatibility, customizable keyboard navigation, text descriptions for icons, etc.

Even just the high contrast would help a lot. Additionally, it would be helpful if users…

  12. Develop a utility to add new location codes to the so-called Branches table using a CSV file as input. Optionally permit updates (overlays) of existing location code entries so that the branch_code_num, name and/or is_public columns may be reassigned values in this way.

Our library has very granular location codes which describe branch (or collection subset of a branch such as a display area), audience, format and genre, loosely speaking. This amounts to 220-250 location codes per branch (or collection subset). We currently have over 5,000 distinct location codes in our Sierra database, and every time a new branch is…

  13. We would like to change the wording on our bills to patrons for long-overdue items from “COLECTIONS AGENCY REPORT CHARGE” to “MATERIALS RECOVERY SERVICE CHARGE,” but this is hard-coded. We use Unique Management, who describes themselves as a materials recovery service, and we try hard to always use that wording and not say "collection" or "collection agency." Some patrons have become alarmed by seeing "collection agency" on our bills for long-overdue items and in their accounts.

  14. Our catalogers would like the option when choosing a field and selecting "Move to Bottom of Group" that it could go to the bottom of the list of numbered tags it is part of instead of the field name of tags. An example is moving a 5xx field to the bottom of a list of other 5xx fields, and not to the bottom of the record if there is an 852 (also a note) field.

  15. Technical Services Staff and Circulation Staff often ask for the ability to toggle between tabs in Check Out. We need to reduce repetitive keyboard strokes at checkout and this workflow requires staff to continually reach for the mouse during a circulation transaction.

For example: There is no way to move from the patron check out screen to the patron holds screen without using the mouse to select the corresponding tab.

The Check Out options (check out, checked, out items, holds, fines, check in, linked patrons, bookings etc) could be hardcoded to the drop down menu options so that Administrators could…

  16. Currently, authentication using the NCIP protocol does not update the CIRCACTIVE attribute in the patron account. We use this protocol to authenticate to a statewide ILL service and we'd like to know when cards are being used in this union catalog and not just our own.

We use CIRCACTIVE to determine which cards are being used and which ones aren't. This is useful for statistical purposes, but is also linked to our patron database purge process.

  17. As a default suppressed records are not included in the harvest stream. This becomes an issue when a harvested record later becomes suppressed in Sierra as the harvester does not know to remove it from its listings as its omission from the stream does not allow for identification of its suppressed state. I would recommend that the option to include suppressed records should be configurable as a harvest stream level, giving the library the ability to configure the inclusion/exclusion dependent on their business rules.

  18. Update the "last checkin" field every time an item is checked in. Now, when you check in an item, the "last checkin" field is not updated if the item is not checked out. I don't know of any reason to not update it. When I look at an item record, I want to know the last date that the item was seen; this can be useful in tracking down items that seem to be missing, or coming up with a list of items that might be missing.

  19. I know its shocking when the subject of pop-ups in Sierra comes up that anyone would want "MORE!," but our Acquisitions staff would like to see a warning of fund spending over limit at invoicing in addition to ordering.

Their rationale is that shipping & Mylar costs usually cannot be pre-determined. Once posting happens, the fund goes negative. Since there is no going back, like when you're about to go down the chute at the end of Splash Mountain, there should be a warning.

  20. The automated tool employed by Clarivate support to update iii and iii-root passwords every 30 days has an 8 character limit, which falls short of PCI requirements (15 characters). The Sierra application server, which hosts the web page connecting to PayPal is in scope for PCI, and therefore login credentials that can edit that web page need passwords of 15 characters or more.
